Here are some ‘side effects’ to expect when transitioning to a healthy, whole foods vegan diet:

  • Unstoppable energy
  • Beautiful skin
  • Weight loss
  • Protection from degenerative disease
  • Hyper sensitivity

Wait, hyper sensitivity? Really?

Yes. We’ve both noticed it. It happens when you eat karmically light food (i.e. when you stop eating distress and pain for breakfast, e.g. bacon and eggs). You get super sensitive, and you just can’t turn a blind eye to needless suffering any longer.

And so what started out as a health kick turns into a moral conviction, and you go from plant based (for health) to vegan (for health, for ethics and for the planet). And more’s the better, because, as you become lighter in body and spirit, you rediscover the idealistic and beautifully naïve person who still resides within.

A Way to Reconnect With Your Inner Child

I’m only just realising that I had this sensitivity all along. As children, our unspoiled empathy means we abhor any suffering, violence and injustice. But then we grow up. We accept the ‘facts of life’. And we disassociate our friends, the animals, from what’s on our plate.

But if we come to realise that not only can we live without animal products, but that we can thrive, the livestock industry reveals itself as the outdated and unjustifiable aberration it truly is. Then we find absolute clarity, that the only way forward is to stop buying into all of that pain and suffering, and expect that our consumer vote will create the ripple effect we need, to stop the madness once and for all!

I was the one who did in our Zojirushi. Arnold tried to save it. For months it wheezed along like a janky old clanker... This is a story about rice, batch cooking, and feeding a family of five without spending a fortune.

I made Arnold quinoa sushi in the Jardin du Luxembourg to win his heart. Years later he sat me down at a kitchen table and fixed dinner forever. Both worked.
