Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie



I am not a fan of heavy metal. All that screaming, roaring, and intense cacophonous racket just makes me want to hurl.*

Call me Grandma, but I like a Gershwin tune. I like the BeeGees. I like Bach.

So it should come as no surprise that I also don’t like heavy metals in my body (mercury, lead, aluminum) because, well, these no-goodniks can elicit:

  • heart disease
  • autism
  • thyroid issues
  • neurological conditions
  • dementia
  • infertility and birth defects…

Seriously. And you don’t wan’ none of that.

Last week Chloe and I had the pleasure of giving an “ayurveda” cooking workshop on detox foods with Indian spices, and this smoothie (our appetizer) was a total hit. (Cilantro/coriander is a very powerful detoxifier for heavy metals, so feel free to go wild with it!) Yes, it’s greeny-green. Yes, it looks like you’re drinking grass or something… but hey, there’s banana in there! And bananas make everything better.

Anyway, give it a try. If you loathe cilantro (and I know someone who does,) maybe use parsley instead and just don’t tell anyone. Then, at your next meal, find a way to incorporate these other detox spices.


Cilantro Detox Smoothie

Words that come to mind when slipping this lil' cup of green goodness: Refreshing. Zingy. Zesty.

To make a smoothie for two:

  • 1 & 1/2 bananas (the remaining half you can chop up to make these little babies… Mmmm.)
  • 1/4 lime
  • 2 handfuls (rinsed) spinach
  • 1 inch (3 cm) ginger root
  • 1/4 bunch of (rinsed) cilantro (or corianda’ for you Brits 😉 )
  • 1 cup filtered water
  • Add a lil’ bit of chlorella if you have it for EXTRA detox.
  1. Slice off most of the lime skin with your favorite knife that makes you feel like a Master Chef. (Leave a bit of white, though — that stuff’s good for you.)
  2. Put all the ingredients into a (preferably) high speed blender (Vitamix, Nutribullet, what have you…) and blend, blend, blend.
  3. Sip and savor. (Remember to always “chew” your smoothies as it helps with the digestive process. Chewing will ensure you don’t feel bloated after drinking your smoothie — a good thing. Learn more here.)
Notes & Tips

If you don’t have a high speed and/or powerful blender, I’d grate the ginger up a bit before tossing it in there, and also roughly chop all the ingredients. With less-than-powerful blenders you can expect to have little bits of green, as opposed to a smooth and creamy texture… don’t worry though, you’re still doing your body good!
