There’s something so gratifying about growth, and I totally geek out on it.
I just love the feeling of tangible improvement.
For example, last year I decided to take up Spanish lessons again. My Spanish up till that point was rudimentary at best, and I really wanted to become fluent. This year, I’m so delighted to report that now I can hablar español rather bien.
Measurable. Progress. Awesome.
See, growth is one of Tony Robbins’ 6 Basic Human Needs, after all, and apparently: Progress = Happiness.
Because, here’s the thing…
Life doesn’t always provide just the gratifying kind of growth. Life is full of loss and challenges. And, yeah, we grow… but often through adversity. And since there are so many unexpected “growing opportunities” that come up in everyone’s lives, one of the best ways I’ve found to combat this is to choose to continually seek growth yourself… before life throws more “gifts” your way.
There’s something empowering about choosing to learn with the sole intention of personal growth, having fun, or quite simply because you’re into it. Passion. Joseph Campbell was perhaps the pioneer of this approach to life — this idea of following your bliss. And, then Alan Watts carried on from there, with:
“What makes you itch? […] Do that.”
I’m a huge avocate of following your bliss, and listening to your itches. It’s the “hero’s journey,” and certainly the brave way to live because it requires a beginner’s mind, and massive motivation.
Which is why, this year, I’m becoming a dancer. (It’s my New Year’s Resolution.)
Now, I do dance. I was a dance minor for most of my collegiate experience, I had my Shirley Temple tapping moments when I was a little whippersnapper, and I can do a decent grand jeté… but, I want to up my game. Kick it into high gear. Look like this:
Dancing, to me, is magic. An inexplicable passion for me… The elegance. The music. The physicality. The curvature of a “banana” foot…
I love it.
Plus, I suppose, as a performer, this is the weak link of my triple threat-ness. And since growth is what we’re after, and passion is our rudder, this is what I must do. It makes me itch.
I’m telling you all because, well, getting all the swirling thoughts from my mind on “paper” certainly feels good, and hopefully they’ll serve you, too.
So, now that that’s off my chest, let’s talk about my many ‘coup de cœur’s of January. ❤️
So, friends, now you know everything…what I’m loving, my secret desire to become an Ann–a Pavlova, and my current obsession with Tibetan gongs.
What’s currently on your radar? Did you watch us eat creamy Moringa avocado smoothie bowls last week? (Man, our lives are tough. 😉 )
Here’s to growth, guys. May we always be its seekers.
P.S. Have you read our full interview on Gunas Girl Diaries? We’re just over the moon about it!
