Motherhood gets overwhelming not because there's too much to do — but because every tiny thing requires a decision. Here's what actually helped me simplify life with a baby and toddlers.
In Parenting
It happened on a Tuesday evening.
Baby Oscar was strapped to my chest, warm and drooly and gloriously heavy. From upstairs I could hear the boys absolutely losing their minds in the bath… splashing, shrieking, my husband doing what can only be described as an improvised comedy routine involving bath toys. I was cleaning the kitchen after dinner, and somewhere between wiping the counter and putting the last dish away, I noticed something strange.
I was dancing.
Not dramatically. Just swaying, the way you do when you’re wearing a baby and a good song comes on and life feels, for one shining moment, completely manageable.
I almost didn’t trust it. Honestly, I got a little suspicious of my own contentment. Three kids — a baby, a toddler, and a four-year-old — and I’m in here dancing? What is happening?
But here’s what I’ve come to understand about those moments: they don’t happen by accident. They happen because something, somewhere, is working. Because enough friction has been removed from your daily life that there’s actually room for joy to sneak in.
That’s what this post — and the video below — is really about.
I want to be upfront about something: I am not a naturally calm person. I am an enthusiastic, high-energy, deeply passionate person who has had to learn calm through intentional systems. And nowhere has that been more true than in this season of life with a baby and toddlers.
When my third son arrived, I didn’t just need better systems. I needed to fundamentally rethink what I was even asking of myself in the first place.
The concept I keep coming back to is decision fatigue, which is the very real phenomenon where every decision you make depletes your mental energy, your bandwidth, your capacity to be present. And what I’ve learned, the hard way… and then the better way, is that motherhood doesn’t become overwhelming because there’s too much to do. It becomes overwhelming when every. tiny. thing. requires a decision.
The goal isn’t to do more, is it?
It’s to ruthlessly reduce the number of things that require your mental energy in the first place.
That’s the through-line in everything I share in this video. Nothin’ fancy or glamorous… just a genuine philosophy of friction reduction, and the specific things that have made this season not just survivable, but genuinely… enjoyable. At least, most of the time.
Mentioned in the video:
If you’ve been trying to find a clean diaper that doesn’t make you choose between your values and your sanity — this is it. Use code VEGGIEANN for 20% off, and do yourself the additional favor of setting up the subscription so you never have to think about it again.
Because a diaper that arrives automatically and never lets you down? That, my friend, is a system.
Here’s the thing about simplifying life with little ones: you can get your systems dialed in, you can reduce friction everywhere you look — and then 5pm arrives and you’re staring into the refrigerator like it personally offended you.
Mealtime is its own category of chaos. And it doesn’t have to be.
I am so excited to share with you, The Calm Meal Formula for Busy Families — a free guide that does for your kitchen what good systems do for everything else: removes the decision fatigue completely. No recipes. Just rhythms, systems, and sanity. A whole-food approach that works whether you’re fully plant-based or just trying to get a nourishing meal on the table without losing your mind.
Because the hardest part of feeding a family isn’t cooking. It’s the daily reinvention. The stalling. The overthinking. The defaulting to whatever’s easiest when your brain is already running on fumes.
The Calm Meal Formula fixes that. And it’s free.
Wishing you dancing-in-the-kitchen moments, pockets of unexpected ease, and the quiet satisfaction of a system that actually works.
With love,
