It turns out that most of us don’t need to worry about protein… like, at all.
Unless you’re a bodybuilder, pregnant, or a high-performance athlete, protein ain’t no thang. So the good news is we can all relax, and confidently order the veggie option without fear of keeling over next week from protein deficiency.
(What should we be worrying about? Getting enough iodine and fiber.)
So why are we so afraid of lacking protein? And why have most of us been taught that animal products are synonymous with protein?
Well, it may have something to do with the “food” industry, and depending on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go, other nefarious agendas… but it’s Christmas time, so let’s keep it light, eh?
Now, do animal “foods” have protein? Sure. But so do plants, without all the dangerous side effects. So let’s do a little dispelling today…
What about you? Did you grow up thinking that animal products = protein?
It’s so relieving to know the truth – plants have protein!

Very good. I still have my Diet For A Small Planet cookbook. I never went completely vegetarian but luckily I love vegetables and eat lots of them! I am one of those who never learned that Frances Moore Lappé corrected her initial statement. Thanks for the info! I always learn something from your posts.
Thank you so much for your kind comment, Liz! That’s so great that you love vegetables and eat a lot of them! They are so good for us! And yes… I didn’t know that Frances M.L. corrected her initial statement until a couple years ago. It’s so interesting!
