Minimalism 101 – How I Became a Minimalist

Why do we keep buying? Well, that's an existential ring-dinger of a question that I'll let you have a ponder about, but let's talk about an effective antidote to our hyper-consumption lives: minimalism.

Minimalism 101 – How I Became a Minimalist

Modern life has taught us to be rather maximalist. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that society and schooling have been inculcating us since we were knee high to a jack rabbit that getting more more more means success or that “we’ve made it.”

I’m not so sure.

And neither are you, most likely.

Deep down, I think we all know that that’s a bunch of bollocks. Life isn’t about stuff, or acquiring more, and having 56 dresses just doesn’t make us happier. If it did, then we wouldn’t have so many weary souls sprinting on the hedonic treadmill.

So then why do we keep buying? Well, that’s an existential ring-dinger of a question that I’ll let you have a ponder about, but let’s talk about an effective antidote to our hyper-consumption lives: minimalism.

Minimalism – A Buzzword

You’ve all heard it before.

From Marie Kondo, to the Minimalists, “minimalism” is a buzzword of our time… so much so that many of you may be rolling your eyes. Yeah yeah, you say, I think I’ll keep my fave winter boots, and my stationery collection, thankyouverymuch.

But, let’s not get lost in the fanfare of trends, friends. Let’s eat the watermelon and spit out the seeds, so to speak. Minimalism can be made your own!

As I explain in the video below, you don’t have to jettison all your favorites to be a minimalist. Or dress like a beige or white-clad Martha Graham. Or sit on the floor, looking at your barren living room pretending to enjoy life.

Nope.

Minimalism is more about making space for what you LOVE. It’s making space for peace of mind, a more zennified existence, and being comfortable. It’s about getting to know yourself and what you truly love, enjoy, and use.

New Series: Matcha + Minimalism ?

Since I’m such a fan of minimalistic living and its holistic wellness benefits, I’m introducing a new series on Veggie Magnifique. In this new series called Matcha + Minimalism, we’ll delve a bit deeper into a variety of minimalism topics whilst enjoying a delicious cup of my favorite “zenergy” tea – matcha. The Japanese are certainly known for their minimalistic tendencies, so it just made sense to have a cup of their tea for this series!

Since reducing the excess and extraneous in my own life – and you better believe that it’s an on-going process – I’ve experienced unparalleled peace. Whether by doing capsule wardrobes or by clearing out the 80% that I don’t use, and opting for the 20% I do (in all categories,) I’ve found that I enjoy my life a whole lot more with less. I’m hoping this series will inspire you to enjoy your life more, too.

Today’s video is a lil’ chat on the basics of minimalism, and a bit of back story on how I became a minimalist. So, grab a bowl of matcha, get cozy, and let’s get into it!

Today's Featured Matcha: Sunday Natural's Uji Premium

Today organic matcha is my current fave: Uji Premium from Sunday Natural. I love its creamy, non-bitter flavor – perfect for newbies and matcha-snobs alike – that is exquisite on its own whisked in hot filtered water, or paired with a creamy oat milk. Try it, I know you’ll love it.

Now… in our current, um, situation does it pay to have some reserves? Absolutely. I’m not talking about not being prepared for various potential eventualities, or living with less than we need. But my point is that many of us probably have a bit more than we ought to in one, or several, categories

So, more more more? No more. (Only if it’s matcha.)
