No matter how much you prepare for the postpartum phase, if you’re a first time mom, it’s likely that you’ll find yourself in a perpetual state of exhaustion, tears, and stupefication.
At least some days. (Or all days.)
Yes, your new little bundle of miraculously multiplied cells is now outside your body and even the wiggle of his fingers and toes makes your heart burst, but let’s leave that aside for a moment…
Because in addition all that splendor, you’re dealing with so much new that your head is spinning.
You are under siege.
Now, it’s a beautiful kind of takeover that involves a lot of sweet sweetness and awe, but you’re also almost guaranteed to feel an overwhelming sense of, well, overwhelm. (Not to mention, you’re probably at the beginning of an existential identity crisis.)
You’re up to your elbows in dishes, bedside table snacks, and doubts. You’re sore, and you’re ravenous. You’re floating on a surreal cloud of bewilderment, and… you’re drowning in fatigue and your own cotton-pickin’ tears.
Unfinished chores stare you down all day, and you have zero capacity/energy to do anything except tend to your baby and try to sleep. If only you could shower. If only you could fix the mess. But, no.
You might as well surrender here, Mama, because tend to baby you must.
Sure.
It’s an absolute miracle, and you know it… which makes you feel even worse about the agony you may feel. (Mom guilt?)
Why, God? Why is it SO hard?
I certainly don’t have the answer to this question, but I do have some tips for you in the hopes of making this sensitive, gorgeous, challenging, bizarre time a smidgen easier for you. Now, I’m not the most experienced mom, that’s for sure – but having gone through all of this somewhat recently, there are just so many things that I wish I would’ve known… so here they are.
Mentioned in the video:
