Choice overwhelm. That’s what we’re up against today.
Ok, so it’s definitely a first world problem, but when it comes to food, the choices presented to us are vast, and can be overwhelming. I often used to stand in supermarket aisles looking at the endless array of possibilities, only to fall back on the same old pasta and tomato sauce combo. Sound familiar?
Over the years, and with the help of Dr. Greger’s Daily Dozen, I’ve found much more clarity about how to keep a pantry full of delicious basics from which to make quick and healthy meals.
Having a pantry that’s stocked with these staples will save you from a lot of choice overwhelm. Hungry? All you have to do is dip into your batch-cooked pans of grains and beans, add a few veggies and sprinkles, and voilà! Insta-yum.
It’s that Steve Jobs decision-avoidance approach that makes life that bit smoother. It’s not about eating the same thing every day, it’s about using similar bases from which to explore new and subtle iterations.
Plus, there’s something about simplicity and repetition that ends up taking you to new heights of deliciousness. You tweak those handful of creations every time, moving ever closer to culinary perfection.
Here are our pantry essentials to get you cooking up a plant-based storm in no time. (Please excuse the tea hyperbole. We really are obsessed.)
We sincerely hope this video helps to demystify whole food plant-based cooking.

What a good idea – staples. I’m still not quite sure what matcha is. Never mind – I’ll find out. You two are wonderful to watch/listen to.
Yes, having these staples on hand has quite literally changed our lives. As has matcha… methinks you need an initiation. And we are the ones to provide it 🙂 xxx
Hi gals! I was surprised that you didn’t mention tahini or any other nut butters (other than the aside with the Pain des Fleurs)…which are gorgeous to make spicy sauces for noodle or rice dishes. You also mentioned seeds in general, but not ground flax seeds, which are MY LIFE. I also was happy you DIDN’T mention soy or tofu, because, really, it’s not all that great for you. AAAAAaaaaand… SPROUTS. Although I suppose that counts as seeds. Did you do a special on sprouts yet?
Hi Barbara, thank you for your delightful comment! My word, however could we forget nut butter? It is truly a staple round here too. You’re right, it should have gone in. Samesies for sprouts – we lurrrrrve em. We’re not necessarily against soy products, as long as they are organic and non-GM. The hormone disruptor argument is disputed by plant-based doctors. It seems it was propagated to provide an underhand blow to meat replacement foods. Btw, your pantry sounds all kinds of healthy!
Um, also just thought I’d mention this…you girls are AWESOME. Changing the world one meal at a time.
Oh you are just a delight!
