When it came time to start introducing solids to my son, I have to admit… I was a little overwhelmed. First off, I felt like his little system was so pure and unfettered by anything except breastmilk, that I didn’t want to mess it up by giving him the “wrong” foods.
Maybe I was a little overly protective. Maybe I was overwhelmed. Or maybe I’m just a rookie mom, and this is all so… new.
All of the above, surely.
But, friends, let’s just say it: modern parenting is overwhelming.
In bygone days, I feel like parenting was so much less of a “philosophical” undertaking, dividing us into groups and subgroups of how we choose to parent. It was more intuitive, less divisive, and less… judgey. (Am I right, seasoned mamas out there?)
And, frankly, this quest for the “perfect parenting philosophy” can leave you feeling a bit paralyzed.
Am I doing it all wrong?
Is my kid going to end up in therapy later if I start with avocado instead of sweet potato?!?!?
I meeeeeean, I’m exaggerating, but that’s kinda what it feels like sometimes.
See, before you become a parent, you’re blissfully unaware of all the different “schools of thought” that will soon come into play. Do you co-sleep or use a crib, or even a Montessori floor bed? Do you nurse on-demand or have feeding times? Do you sleep train or perish the thought? To pacify, or not to pacify?
Is your head spinning? Mine is.
When baby reaches around six months of age, parents are met with another big doozy of a dilemma…
Do I start with solid foods? Or fancy purées made specially in my food processor? And what is this baby-led weaning (BLW) thing I keep hearing about?
And just upfront here… I’m not going to tell you whether or not you should do BLW. When it comes to feeding your precious bubba, or just parenting in general, I’ll repeat what I’ve said from the beginning: You gotta do what’s right for you and your family.
And, furthermore, if you’re confused or overwhelmed (like I was,) it’s always a good idea to do a little digging… which is how I found Karla. 🙂
Karla Moreno-Bryce is a registered dietitian, mama of two, and an advocate for a fully plant-based diet. On her platform, she shares oodles of ideas for new parents on how to properly nourish their bouncing babes. One of her specialties? You guessed it – baby-led weaning.
In today’s special, longer-form VeggieMagnifiqueTV episode, I ask Karla all my (and your!) burning BLW questions. E.g. What is baby-led weaning? Which foods to start with? Which supplements should we give baby? And so much more. I truly hope you enjoy this chat with Karla as much as I did!
Do we do baby-led weaning exclusively? Nope. We do a bit of both, depending. We’ve gotten into a good groove that feels right for us and our baby, which, again, may look different for every family.
Now, I’d love to hear from you guys! Any takeaways from the interview today? Are any of you gung-ho BLW-ers or more so tradi-spoon-feeders?
Thanks for being here, friends, and talk soon,
