There’s a beautiful truth when it comes to weight loss and it is this: caloric density.
In short, when you eat foods that are high in fiber and low in calories, you lose weight. Why? Because the fiber fills your belly properly and your body is like, “K, cool, I’m full. Thanks.” (Oh, and bonus – foods that are filled with fiber are usually also rich in nutrients and vitamins so not only are you full, but your internal organs and systems are also happy.)
However, when you eat high-calorie foods, like say, very fatty foods, there’s usually little to no fiber so you don’t feel full, hence why you can eat and eat and eat. Suddenly you’ve exploded the calorie budget for your size and you’re still not satisfied.
And voilà — now you know everything.
But let’s continue…
A fiber rich diet that’s super wham bam re: caloric density is – you guessed it – a whole foods plant based diet.
What I love about eating a plant based diet, and specifically a whole foods plant based diet, is that you can have your fill and then some and still lose weight. You can swim in abundance and not paltry portions! (Because your girl doesn’t like to be deprived.)
For example, when people tell me that I don’t look like I had a baby three months ago, this is my non-secret “secret.”
Caloric density. Caloric density. Caloric density. (And, like, breastfeeding.) I eat fruit, veggies, whole grains, and legumes in their purest form, as much as possible.
And there you go — the secret is out.
So that’s the food side of things.
But, as you know if you’ve been around these parts for a while, is that weight loss, and health in general, is a very holistic game. Meaning, you can eat as many carrots and celery sticks as you jolly well please, but if you’re emotionally stressed, unsteady, or depressed, your weight often reflects this. (Either in weight gain or weight loss.)
The truth is, when we’re having a hard time emotionally, many of us have a very hard time making good food choices. (Also, I made a whole video about how I healed my relationship with food, so definitely check that out if this resonates with you.)
Now, I’m not going into today is the emotional side of eating and weight loss, though it is arguably the most important – because it’s a whole topic that we can go into further another day. I just wanted to bring this up so that we all are on the same page… i.e. the eating plan is pretty straight forward, the emotional side of things, not so much.
But let’s get into the video where we go into much more detail about the food side of things.
So there you have it!
Weight loss may not be easy but it isn’t complicated. (Need help sticking to new habits? Check out last week’s post all about the science of habits.)
Wishing you a warm and toasty weekend,
